Stadio Meazza, the European Parliament wants to see clearly

The San Siro case even lands in the European Parliament. The attention of the continental institutions on the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, which Inter and Milan would like to demolish and replace with a new facility, was brought to the attention of the San Siro Coordination, the citizens' committee that has been fighting against the decision of the Municipality of Milan for years to endorse the urban project desired by the two clubs, which in addition to the stadium would like to build – on a green area of about 5 hectares – also skyscrapers, a shopping centre, a congress center and hotels. Indeed, the Commission unanimously accepted the urgent procedure for the petition "In defense of the public Meazza stadium at San Siro", presented in Brussels by the MEP (elected with the 5 Star Movement but now passed to the Greens) Eleonora Eve. The discussion in Parliament could be scheduled as early as March or April.

"It's really good news: citizens will finally be able to be heard," exulted Gabriella Bruschi, president of the San Siro Coordination Committee. “As we have always maintained, the San Siro Stadium issue is not just a story of a neighborhood or even of a single city, but an international issue. The Meazza stadium in San Siro, as demonstrated, can be restructured and modernized in a big way, there is no need to build a new stadium and destroy the existing greenery”. In fact, just a few days ago, the eligibility certification of the "old" Meazza for another 10 years (for the decade 2020-2030), after passing the recent tests. The counter-proposal of the committee, presented through the engineers Riccardo Aceti and Nicola Magistretti, is of a project to refurbish the existing stadium, which also provides for the replacement of the third ring with an extraordinary panoramic gallery at a height of 45 metres, and spaces of up to 30.000 mXNUMX which can be used for services, entertainment and sports.

“Building that mammoth work – MEP Evi said instead – would mean sustaining an enormous overbuilding process and losing a green area of over five hectares. It is a very useful green lung to reduce thermal peaks and improve the air quality of an area that has serious problems in this sense. For this reason, I asked for the urgent procedure, denouncing yet another pour of concrete that would suffocate the Milanese and that would go in the opposite direction to the new European political agenda. Environmental protection and citizens' health cannot wait”.
