Spending review, Cottarelli: "If they want another, I'll step aside"

“I have a 3-year spend review contract. I don't think my position is spoiled but I'm the first to say that if they want someone else, I'll step aside. I'm waiting to see if the new government has an interest in keeping me or I'll leave". The special commissioner for the spending review, Carlo Cottarelli, said this when speaking at Bocconi.

"I presented my proposals on February 6 to the previous government but then they decide - he added - now we are in a position of transition between one government and another and it is obvious that it was impossible to present the decisions in Brussels, not I know if they have presented the proposals. The previous Prime Minister Letta has indicated that he has calibrated the target for 2014 downwards. I can confirm what Letta said”.

Regarding relations with Matteo Renzi, Cottarelli said he has not yet had any contact. “I'm available – he added – but there hasn't been any contact yet. I think they are more important issues at the time of the spending commissioner ”. As for how to use any savings obtained from spending cuts, Cottarelli said that politics must decide and confirmed the objective of cuts of 32 billion in 2016.
