Spain, first go-ahead to the austerity budget from Parliament

The absolute majority of the Rajoy government in Parliament rejects all the amendments presented by the other groups and gives the first green light to the 2012 austerity budget. Savings of 27,3 billion are expected and a reduction of the deficit to 5,3% of GDP from 8,5% of 2011.

“The economic situation is very difficult – commented Prime Minister Mario Rajoy – At this moment it must be emphasized that the Government has the strength to adopt a series of decisions which are positive for Spain. Even if there will be no effect in the short term, we will do what needs to be done."
