Spain: PSOE says no to Rajoy and calls for a "Government of change"

The socialists have nothing to say to Mariano Rajoy and for the umpteenth time they confirm that they do not want to endorse a possible investiture of him, nor of any other member of the popular party, as Premier.

This was stated by PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez, who didn't even leave Rajoy the time to make his offers, namely the presidency of the Chamber and the go-ahead for constitutional reforms, asking in exchange for a vote of confidence or at least the abstention which would allow him to occupy the seat of Prime Minister.

At the moment the refusal seems to be total. The reason is obvious: "The party will not support Rajoy and the PP because citizens have expressed their will to change through the vote."

If Rajoy will not govern, what will be the political future of Spain? "The first political force has the responsibility of attempting to form a government and - continued Sanchez - once the process is completed, we will implement the mandate that the citizens have entrusted to us, forming a Government of change”.

A government of change that in the intentions of the PSOE will be presided over by Sanchez. At this point, however, it will be necessary to find the numbers. The socialists have already ruled out any agreement with Podemos that would grant Catalonia the independence referendum requested by Iglesias. "We will not accept this hypothesis, it is the last of the options to consider". However, it should be emphasized that at the moment, not even the alliance with Podemos would allow the socialist party to reach the 176 seats necessary to govern. Over the next few weeks, negotiators mandated by all political parties will meet to find a solution. Next Monday Rajoy will meet Pablo Iglesias, immediately after it will be the turn of the leader of Ciudadanos, Rivera. But at the moment, governability seems to be a utopia.
