Spain and Catalonia: unionist rescue

In Madrid yesterday and in Barcelona today large popular demonstrations in defense of the unity of Spain and against Catalan independence – Premier Rajoy assures: "No illegal negotiations with Catalonia".

Over 50 demonstrators took to the streets in Madrid yesterday for the unity of Spain and against the independence of Catalonia, but also against pacts and compromises with Barcelona, where today the unionists will hold a rally against independence. Yesterday 5.500 demonstrators marched in Barcelona to support unity with Spain.

Two days before the assembly of the Catalan Parliament which could proclaim independence from Madrid and Spain, the signs of dissent from the majority of Catalans who do not approve of the secession project are multiplying. Mariano Rajoy answered them. In an interview with El Pais, the Premier said that he will not give in to the blackmail of independence activists: “I say to the Spaniards that they have the total and absolute certainty that the Government will prevent any declaration of independence from turning into anything. Spain will continue to be Spain and it will be for a long time”.

A red and yellow river in flood. Hundreds of thousands of people - 350 for the police, 950 for the organizers - invaded the center of Barcelona with Spanish flags in hand to oppose the plans of the Catalan president Carles Puigdemont to proclaim independence, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

But Puigdemont does not back down: "The declaration of independence is foreseen by the law of the referendum as an application of the results: we will apply what the law says", he reiterated in an interview recorded in recent days and broadcast tonight on Tv3. But the situation is changing by the hour and yesterday's words may already be outdated. For Catalonia, these are the most difficult 48 hours.

“In defense of democracy, the Constitution and freedom. We will preserve the unity of Spain. You are not alone". This is Rajoy's tweet on the day of the mega march in Barcelona against secession.
