Sotheby's, Warhol breaks record: 105 million for Silver Car Crash
Record days for New York auctions. 24 hours after Francis Bacon's triptych sold for the historic figure of 142,4 million, Sotheby's has sold Andy Warhol's "Silver Car Crash" for $105,4 million, the highest sum ever paid for a work by the American artist. The previous record for a canvas by the king of Pop Art was set for another painting from the same series, "Death and Disaster", or the "Green Car Crash", sold for 71 million dollars.

As with Bacon's triptych, the buyer of the work participated in the auction via telephone and at the moment remains anonymous. Sotheby's estimate for “Silver Car Crash” was $60 million. The canvas, composed in 1963, has only been on public display once in the past 26 years. The "Death and Disaster" series consists of three other canvases, which are located in museums in New York, Switzerland and Vienna.
