Sotheby's, auction in New York: Monet, Picasso and many others

The Evening Auction to be held at Impression & Modern Art in New York on May 14 will feature one of the masterpieces of Impressionism: Meules by Claude Monet estimated at over $55 Million will lead the private collection of Impressionist paintings. There will be works by artists such as Picasso, Caillebotte, Gauguin, Bonnard and many others.

Sotheby's will once again present the highlights of the Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art  in New York which will take place on 14st May. The wonderful series Grindstones by Claude Many will anticipate a group of eight Impressionist masterpieces offered in the May evening sale of the same private collection, which includes significant examples by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Signac,Alfred Sisley and Édouard Vuillard.

MEULES BY CLAUDE MONET

Grindstones created in 1890, is one of the most famous images in the history of art and one of the only four works from the Monet series to be auctioned this century (estimate over $55 million). Meules is one of eight specimens stayed in private hands. The other 17 specimens reside in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée d'Orsay, Paris and six in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

LATE PORTRAITS OF PABLO PICASSO

The Evening Sale will offer a selection of eight paintings by Pablo Picasso from 1906 to 1968. The May sale is led by two monumental canvases of Years' 60. woman with dog it is a portrait that depicts Jacqueline Roque sitting in an armchair while petting Picasso's Afghan dog, Kabul (estimate $25/30 million). Roque was there second wife of Picasso who remained with him until his death in 1973, and her portraits constitute the largest group of images made among women in the artist's life.

Also, in 1968 Picasso made a number of canvases including Mousquetaire a la pipe (estimate $20/30 million). The Musketeer was one of those figures that Picasso used to represent aspects of his identity.

THE LEVY FAMILY COLLECTION

The selection of works from the Levy Family Collection is guided by Gustave's paintings Curd, Paul Gauguin and Pierre Bonnard.

Painted in 1878, Rue Halévy, the sixth-century street by Gustave Caillebotte is the embodiment of new Paris of the mid-XNUMXth century (estimate $6/8 million). One of the most notable examples in the series of his urban landscapes. In the collection, there is also Chemin under the palmiers by Paul Gauguin embodies the artist's interest in the exotic (estimate $6/8 million).

One of Pierre Bonnard's most extraordinary seaside scenes to remain in private hands, Femme à sa toilette (Le Peignoir) captures his beloved wife, Marthe de Meligny, in a private moment just before stripping (estimate $4 million).

THE BAKWIN COLLECTION

Dr Ruth Morris and Dr Harry Bakwin spent their free time frequenting galleries and museums. The Bakwin Collection is led by a group of four works including L'oncle Dominique en casquette, a fine early work by Paul Cézanne (estimate $2,5 / 3,5 million). La Femme en rouge by Chaïm Soutine (estimate $6/8 million), le Deux prostituées & Filles by Georges Rouault (estimate $200/300.000) and the Femme caribe by Paul Gauguin which includes elements of distant lands, set in a field of dancing sunflowers in homage to Vincent van Gogh (estimate $4/6 million).

BALTHUS: THE STUDIO FOR “LE SALON”

Painted in 1941, l'Etude pour “Le Salonby Balthus encompasses the themes of adolescence and nonchalance depicted throughout his output (estimate $2,5/3,5 million). The work is inspired by farm of his friend Pierre Leyris in Champrovent, in which Georgette, the farmer's thirteen-year-old daughter was his role model. She is portrayed while sleeping on the sofa, she is the image of fantasy and carefree abandon.
