Sustainability, Lasco (Poste Italiane): "Our choices weigh on the system"

Al Green Talks RCS Academy managers and financial institutions exchanged views on experiences, strategies and choices of economic evaluation and investment on the environment, in the light of the PNRR and the EU sustainability targets for carbon neutrality. Among the participants Joseph Lasco, Co-director of the Italian Post Office in the session dedicated to “Sustainable development and innovative projects: the business experience”.

"The environmental sensitivity of the average consumer - explained Lasco in his speech - today has grown a lot compared to the past: there is not only more information, but the sustainability of a product and of a company is a driver for choosing the product itself . The message of sustainability must have the objective of providing information at a higher level, which must not be limited to the choice of a product but to raise awareness of how much that choice impacts on the system”.

As far as sustainable communication is concerned, "it can only be effective if structured processes in a sustainable key are created at the base". For Lasco, "the substance of strategies is the truthfulness of what we communicate". And then he added that Poste Italiane's efforts were concentrated precisely on this aspect, underlining that "one of our main choices was to organize multi-stakeholder forums in an organic way with the frequency of participation of over 500 stakeholders, because it is through these discussions that define the sustainability strategies. I am convinced that this open transversal attitude helps to strengthen a company's reputation”.

Therefore, the Group's commitment is to "listen to the needs of stakeholders and create bonds of trust and transparency" which consolidate the sustainability strategy. Poste Italiane's sustainability is now certified by the 10 best rating agencies and "we are in the top positions worldwide" in almost all areas of sustainability comparison. Hence the announcement that Poste Italiane was ranked first in the rankings ESG Overall Score di Euronext Vigeo-Eiris 2021 on sustainable development policies with a very high score, improving by 10 points compared to the previous two-year period.

“The excellent results – added the Co-Director of Poste Italiane – confirm the solidity of the sustainability path we have undertaken in recent years. This milestone achieved makes us proud of what our people have done and allows us to look with confidence at the objectives set in the Group's Sustainability Strategy, an integral part of the new Industrial Plan. We are aware that only responsible growth will allow us to contribute to the ambitious United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

Among the ESG targets there is the objective of “cut 30% of total emissions by 2025. And we have also set the goal of having no net carbon emissions by 2030, a challenging goal but concrete for us and ahead of the continental guidelines". To reduce emissions, the Group has launched the renewal of the fleet which will be completely sustainable, “we will install over 4 charging stations and create zero-emission delivery areas with 100% electric fleets. The new green fleet will generate a reduction of carbon dioxide equal to 80 trees".

In addition, much has been done to disseminate the PV in buildings: “we have a plan to install 622 photovoltaic systems”. Finally, the introduction of ESG principles also "in the procurement process" to ensure the best environmental performance. “Our choices weigh on the system, because we have significant dimensions, both in terms of people and in terms of impacts, also at an infrastructural level”, concluded Giuseppe Lasco.
