Sustainability: the ESG ranking of Italian companies

Poste Italiane is in first position in the ranking of Italian companies with the most sustainable strategies in environmental, social and governance (ESG) terms. They are tied for second place Eni e Generali, followed in turn by another ex aequo, the one between Enel e Snam. Rounding out the top-10 are Ivy, Iren, Unicredit, Cnh e Mediobanca. This is the ranking that emerges from the tables of theIntegrated Governance Index 2020, the index that measures the integration of sustainability into corporate strategies, presented last July 14 at the Digital ESG Business Conference (during which the research conducted with Assofondipensione on “Pension funds and ESG engagement” was also illustrated).

Based on the results of the analysis - which this year, for the fifth edition, involved 74 companies, against 61 in 2019 and 47 in 2018 - Ivy is confirmed in first place in theFinance area, in which the links between companies and responsible investors are analysed. The group underlines the recent entry into the FTSE Russell indices and recalls having launched the first Italian green bond and the first sustainable revolving credit line. Returning to the ESG index, after Hera are followed, all on equal merit, by Enel, Generali and Intesa Sanpaolo. For its part, Poste notes, in a note, that it has achieved first place "also in the new survey area introduced this year, called "ESG Digital Governance" and relating to the application of digital systems and platforms in the management of ESG data" .

Part of this year's analysis was devoted to ESG Digital Governanceand, i.e. the application of sustainability criteria in digital data management systems and platforms. Also in this case the gold medal belongs to Poste Italiane, while the other two steps of the podium are occupied by Eni and A2A. Iren and Italgas are tied in fourth position, while the next position is occupied by another tie, that between Enav and Cementir.

Among unlisted companies, the best are Bnl, Fs and Crédit Agricole Italia.

The Integrated Governance Index is the only quantitative analysis model of the degree of integration of ESG factors in corporate strategies and in 2020 saw the collaboration of 354 managers, reaching an average of 5 managerial figures per company (compared to 4 in 2019 and 3 o'clock in 2018).
