Sustainability, Enea and Shell Energy agree for hydrogen in Italy

The three-year collaboration agreement aims to contribute to the country's energy transition with a focus on the decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors, for energy-intensive companies such as steel, cement, glass

Sustainability, Enea and Shell Energy agree for hydrogen in Italy

Promote conversion a hydrogen of industrial processes and develop optical energy solutions planet. It is the goal of new partnership triennial between Aeneas and Shell Energy based on the increase in the production of "green" hydrogen in the country, in particular the decarbonisation of energy-intensive companies.

In particular, the agreement provides for the creation of working groups for research activities, joint feasibility studies and analyzes of industrial plants with high energy consumption in various sectors, including steel, cement, glass, ceramics, paper and aluminium.

The agreement is also based on innovative and technologically advanced solutions for the development of innovative technologies in the field of hydrogen through integrated water electrolysis projects fueled by the generation of solar renewable energy, hydrogen storage processes and, finally, its use in gas distribution networks.

"This agreement with Shell Energy Italia will allow the development of innovative technologies and solutions with an internationally renowned partner in projects for the production of hydrogen in Europe and in the decarbonisation of large industrial customers in Italy - he declared George Graditi, Director of the ENEA Department of Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources -. The systematic use of green hydrogen is strategic for reducing the environmental impact and achieving the objectives of the Paris climate agreements, the Green Deal and the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate. The development of a national supply chain in this sector also has important implications for supporting the birth and growth of a hydrogen ecosystem in our country and within the Mediterranean basin”.

While Massimiliano Mannino, President of Shell Energy Italia commented on the agreement: "We are convinced that thanks to ENEA's many years of experience and our knowledge of the market, gained by supplying gas and electricity to over 500 large commercial and industrial customers, innovative solutions can be concretely launched and sustainable solutions for the energy transition as well as promoting a structural change in final energy consumption".
