Contraction avoided in the fourth quarter – In 2014 as a whole, GDP grew by 0,1% compared to the previous year: this is the worst result since 2009.

Surprisingly, in the fourth quarter of 2014 the GDP of the Brazil, in seasonally adjusted terms, grew by 0,3% on a quarterly basis, while gEconomists had forecast a 0,1% drop. On an annual basis, however, the result was negative by 0,2%.

This was announced today by the Institute of Geography and Statistics (Ibge), adding that in 2014 as a whole, GDP grew by 0,1% compared to the previous year. This is the worst result since 2009, in the midst of the international crisis, when it scored -0,2%. 

Starting from the fourth quarter, the Ibge changed the methods of calculating GDP, including for the first time also investment and research and development activities, in order to bring the figure more in line with international standards.
