Sony enters the electric car market

In spring Sony could enter the market for electric vehicles with a new company, the Sony Mobility Inc. This was stated by the president of the Japanese giant, Kenichiro Yoshida, speaking at the CES technology fair in progress in the USA. “We believe Sony is well positioned to redefine mobility,” he explained.

The manager also presented an SUV prototype, the Vision-S 02, which uses the same EV platform as the coupe Vision-S 01, previously announced, which has started road tests in Europe from December 2020.

Although the group's leadership in consumer electronics has been eroded by Asian rivals such as South Korea's Samsung, Sony still has an arsenal of sophisticated technology in key areas such as sensors for autonomous driving.

The company is also one of the largest entertainment companies in the world, controlling major video game and film franchises. And audio and entertainment systems are increasingly the focus for new generation vehicles.

Le shares of Sony rose 4,2% in Tokyo after the announcement of electric vehicle plans, while the Nikkei finished flat.

Yoshida emphasized that the company sees mobility as a space where passengers can choose individual entertainment options and use 5G internet connection.
