Sogin and Carabinieri: memorandum of understanding for the management and safety of radioactive waste

Sogin and Arma dei Carabinieri have signed an important memorandum of understanding on security. The Protocol is aimed at "collaborating in the recovery, management and safety of radioactive and conventional waste and orphan radioactive sources" specifies a statement from Sogin. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Undersecretary for the Environment and Energy Security, Claudio Barbaro, the Commissioner of Sogin, Prefect Fiamma Spena and the Commander of the Carabinieri for Environmental Protection and Ecological Transition, Gen. B. Valerio Giardina.

Sogin-Carabinieri: what the memorandum of understanding provides

The Protocol provides for the organization of reciprocal training activities in sectors of common interest and collaboration in the development of analysis activities, and possible updating, of the procedures concerning the management of radioactive and conventional waste, as well as of the excavated earth and rocks produced in the works decommissioning of nuclear sites.

The agreement is in line with the circular economy strategy that Sogin has always adopted to minimize the waste produced and maximize the volume of materials to be recovered. A strategy that develops on four drivers: recycling of the dismantled materials; efficiency energy consumption; reuse of structures and components during the decommissioning works; reduction of the environmental impact in each phase of the works. The dismantling of Italian nuclear plants will make it possible to recover over one million tons of material, 89% of the structures, systems and components that will be dismantled.
