Snam and Terna allies for electricity-gas convergence

Snam e Terna have signed a preliminary agreement to carry out common initiatives, in particular on research, development and innovation and on possible convergences between the electricity system and the gas system. The agreement was signed by the managing directors Marco Alverà (Snam) and Luigi Ferraris (Terna).

The operation fits into the process of conversion carried out by Snam, which – for reduce dependence on fossil fuels and therefore the environmental impact – aims to convert its compression and storage plants into "dual energy" gas-electric.

As far as the research and development sector is concerned, the Snam-Terna collaboration will focus onuse of renewables for the production of electricity and on new technologies for analyzing and monitoring infrastructures, construction sites and the hydrogeological composition of territories.

"The electricity system is experiencing a moment of decisive change, characterized by an energy transition that involves the entire sector and for which everyone is called to do their part - he comments Ferraris – The agreement signed today goes in this direction and the collaboration between Terna and Snam to define and implement common initiatives further strengthens Terna's commitment as a protagonist and enabling factor in the transition underway."

Alverà instead underlines that “the objective of this agreement is to pool the experience and skills of two companies of excellence such as Snam and Terna in a context of growing convergence between electricity and gas, to the benefit of the Italian energy system. This initiative is a further step in Snam's change towards the energy company of the future: with the new Snamtec project and the new investments envisaged in innovation and sustainability - from biomethane to energy efficiency, from sustainable mobility to 'dual energy' plants - we want be increasingly protagonists of the energy transition”.

On Thursday Alverà had also signed up an agreement with Cassa depositi e prestiti, again as part of the Snamtec project, to promote initiatives of energy efficiency on the real estate assets of the Public Administration. Based on the agreement, Snam will contribute industrial, technical and commercial skills, while CDP will make available its economic-financial skills as well as the management of relations with the public administrations and competent institutions.
