Snam, agreement in India for hydrogen

Snam enters India through a series of cooperation agreements in the energy transition, particularly in hydrogen and sustainable mobility, with some of the most important national companies. The agreements were announced today as part of the virtual summit between the Italian prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, and the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi.

In particular, Snam has launched with Adani, one of the main Indian infrastructure and energy groups, a cooperation on the energy transition, which will materialize in the study of projects related to the hydrogen supply chain in India and internationally, as well as the development of biomethane and biogas and sustainable mobility.

Furthermore, an agreement was signed with the subsidiary Adani Gas Limited (joint venture between Adani Group and Total SE) for set up an equal joint venture aimed at promoting the development of the refueling infrastructure to support sustainable mobility in India, favoring the use of natural gas, as envisaged by the Indian government programmes. The joint venture, the construction of which is subject to the signing of a binding agreement, will have the objective of building a compressor factory with Cubogas technology, a Snam4Mobility company, for the supply of natural gas to vehicles, to be installed in supply existing and developing ones.

Snam has also signed an agreement with Greenko, one of the largest renewable energy producers in the country, aimed at starting cooperation to support the development of the hydrogen supply chain in India. Under the agreement, the two companies will be able to collaborate in the study of hydrogen production methods from renewable sources, in the design of hydrogen-ready infrastructures and in possible final applications both in industry and in transport, including fuel cell mobility.

Finally, it was signed a memorandum of understanding with Indian Oil, a state company among the largest integrated energy operators in the country, aimed at possible joint projects for the energy transition and in the gas infrastructure chain, with particular interest in initiatives in the natural gas storage and liquefaction sectors.

“Entering the Indian market – he comments the managing director of Snam Marco Alverà – is a new stage in Snam's internationalization process. Thanks to partnerships with some of the main national groups, leveraging our skills and our technologies, we have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution in a country that is particularly active in the energy transition and which presents many opportunities. The objective of these agreements is to promote the growth of green hydrogen in India and other countries to decarbonise industries and transports as well as further develop natural gas and hydrogen mobility in a large market”.

The current agreements may be the subject of subsequent binding agreements between the parties, with which to define terms and conditions for implementing the cooperation and projects.
