Smartphone: in 2016 we will say goodbye to the SIM, the internal chip is coming

2016 will be a key year for the future of mobile. It now seems increasingly certain that this year we will say goodbye to the SIM card in our smartphones. A step that now seems inevitable after the reduction of the dimensions to micro-sim first and then to nano-sim.

The telecommunications industry has tried to delay the appointment as much as possible, due to the possible problems that the various operators may have to face due to the disappearance of the "physical bond" with the customer, but now the changeover can no longer be postponed .

The Sim card will disappear from our smartphones and will be replaced by a so-called electronic Sim or eSim, a fixed chip present in every mobile device.

The new technology will be officially presented at the upcoming Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona on February 22nd.

The transition from the SIM to the eSim will take place in two phases. The first foresees the application to all mobile devices, with the exception of smartphones, while in phase 2, scheduled for the summer of 2016, the latter will also be involved, completing the project process.

The change will imply not only the physical disappearance of the Card, but also the possibility for customers to change operator in a very short time, not having to wait for the card to be received. Each customer will also be able to "maintain" several operators, but only activating one at a time.

Another important change will concern the costs of international roaming. Precisely thanks to the fact that each of us can have different operators, we will be able to choose the most convenient one during our travels, having the possibility of opting for a local operator as well.
