Smartphones, Huawei against all

FROM THE BLOG "LA CASA DI PAOLA" - On October 18 in Munich, the Chinese manufacturer will present two simply amazing devices, Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Smartphones, Huawei against all

Gone are the days when the Chinese looted the patents of others, shamelessly copying. Now there are many, and in all sectors of technology, Chinese companies that are taking their competitors, preferably Korean and - lese majesty - also American, to the courts of the whole world for infringement of their patents. This happens especially for smartphones; on October 18 in Munich, the Chinese manufacturer Huawei – turnover of 24,4 billion euros, third worldwide for smartphone sales, first on the gigantic Chinese market (followed by compatriots Oppo and Vivo soon in Europe) – will present two simply amazing devices, Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Amazing because they embark the first real Artificial Intelligence chip superior in performance to other neural chips, even to that of the new iPhone that everyone, with little sense of professional ethics, celebrated ramshacklely, excessively. We explain ourselves with the simple words of those who, at IFA 2107, presented the world's first AI neural chip (NPU, Neural Processing Unit).

THE DIFFERENCE? ALL AI IS AT YOUR SERVICE

That's right. Today we have devices with AI: lots of them, and – excuse the trivial terms – of excellent quality, only that not all of them are available, on the contrary, they are located in the company's cloud, on very powerful servers but in practice lacking that flexibility and that mobility that AI should have for real responsiveness to what a smartphone user does and wants. Huawei's Kirin 970 neural chip does this, it becomes a bridge between the overwhelming power and intelligence located on the cloud servers and the data coming from the smartphone. Translated into an example with unscientific but hopefully understandable words, it means that while the other AI devices - and not just smartphones - available today, have to use personal assistants such as Samsung's Bixbi or Apple's Siri to create the connection with the AI located in the cloud, the Huawei one, thanks to the Kirin 970 is located on the motherboard of the smartphone.

The possibilities of a direct and immediate, "humanoid" dialogue between smartphone and user is such that there is no need to give orders to any assistant to then receive the ok from the cloud and then have execution, but just ask questions to receive answers and operations right away, instantly. Gigantic opportunities are opening up to assist – for example – people to immediately understand what they want, to interpret even the expression, the raising of the eyebrows or something else. To give personalized services in real time.

ITALIANS LIKE HUAWEI VERY MUCH

To get an idea of the qualities of this neural chip, according to what has been declared, it can, for example, process 2 images per minute and with less power and consumption; there is nothing so fast in the world. And it can perform an unimaginable amount of operations at the same time… On October 16th in Munich the first of the smartphones with the AI of Kirin 970, Mate 10 and probably also Mate 10 Pro will be presented. At a price, it seems, decidedly balanced. A second news is that on November 30 Huavei will open the first European flagship store in Milan, but it will also be the first Huawei store in the world of the new experiential store model where the consumer will be able to try the company's advanced digital products in interactive and "exciting" ways Chinese. The choice of Italy derives from the fact that Huawei is the second largest smartphone brand in Italy and after China, ours is also the brightest and fastest growing market.

ATTACK COMPETITORS AT THE RATE OF 3.900 PATENTS A YEAR

A few days after Apple's presentation of the new iPhone, with facial recognition thanks to AI, the challenge started from Shenzen, headquarters of the Chinese giant. “The real AI phone is ours, and you will see it on October 16 in a worldwide presentation. And within 5 years we will be the world No. 1 for smartphones”. Huawei, currently in third place in the world for sales after Apple and Samsung, reportedly filed 2015 patents in 3.900 alone, and it is assumed that the pace of innovation has continued, is the first consumer electronics company to invest 10% of turnover in R&D and everyone recognizes it, opponents, experts, users.

This must be why he sued Samsung for patent infringement asking for 11 million euros in damages while Samsung attacked with the same accusation asking for double. It's a great match between giants started by Cisco years ago who accused Huawei of copying router software, thus managing to keep the Chinese out of the US TLC market. The small Chinese manufacturer Baili has won a lawsuit against Apple for copying its smartphones with the iPhone 6.

And in the meantime Xiaomi has bought 1500 patents from Microsoft. Why did Google buy the talents and innovations of the Taiwanese giant HTC for 924 million euros, i.e. 2 engineers and patent licenses? And did it do so after 5 years ago acquiring Motorola which then, after having had disastrous sales results, it passed at… liquidation price to Lenovo? Because Google wants at all costs to enter the rich world of mobile telephony which has yet to conquer more than half of the world's markets. And with rising prices.
