Smarter POS from 2026: what changes for merchants and how to adapt

A starting from January 2026, the POS will have to become more Intelligent, in compliance with the new tax legislation. The operators are obliged to comply, as established by the provision of theInland Revenue of March 7, in line with the latest Budget Law.

The new terminals will no longer be limited to managing transactions, but will have to automatically transmit each operation to the Tax Office, integrating directly with cash registers. The goal is clear: to guarantee greater tax transparency, reduce tax evasion and at the same time simplify the obligations for merchants.

What changes for POS and cash registers from 2026

Until now, the payment and tax registration processes were separate: the POS handled the transaction, while the electronic register (the “cash register”) handled the registration of the operation. This system, however, could leave room for errors or omissions in the data. The new regulation, however, aims at a'total integration: every transaction it will come automatically recorded e transmitted atInland Revenue, reducing bureaucracy and increasing fiscal control.

However, for merchants, the adaptation involves costs and some inconvenience. It will be necessary to update the payment terminals or, in the case of non-compatible devices, replace them with new terminals compliant with the technical specifications required by the regulation.

The impact on small traders

This change will have a significant impact especially on small merchants, while large-scale distribution is already ready to adapt. The regulation involves both physical POS and software POS, and forces those who do not use integrated devices to review their operating procedures.

Furthermore, unlike what happened in the past, the Government has not provided incentives to facilitate the transition of operators towards the new standards.
