Smart Grids, here is the first master: organized by Polimi and Enel

The first international second-level Master's is born dedicated to training experts in the field of Smart Grids. It is organized by the Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the Enel Group.

The master, unique in its kind, is aimed at recent graduates and has the objective of training highly qualified professionals capable of tackling complex digital network design and management problems, as well as promoting technological innovation in the field of electricity distribution systems. Smart Grids constitute the digital and resilient infrastructure enabling the decarbonisation and electrification of the energy system through the full integration of distributed generation from renewable sources and the active participation of consumers in the energy market.

Through its Global Infrastructure & Networks division, Enel is one of the leading operators of Smart Grids in the world, managing more than two million km of power lines in 8 countries and has always been recognized as a leader in innovation in this sector. In particular, through the Network Digital Twin project, Enel was recently recognized by the World Economic Forum as the author of one of the main innovations in the electricity sector in the last ten years.

“We need professionals who can actively contribute to the management of the innovative and intelligent grids of the future, designed to improve the electricity service and encourage the spread of energy production from renewable sources – says Vincenzo Ranieri, Enel's Head of Infrastructure and Networks Italy - . The energy transition it's a big challenge but also a great opportunity for professional growth for young talents willing to innovate and develop a modern, digitized and sustainable energy system".

The Master open to international students will contribute to the creation of solid skills in the areas of design and automation of electrical systems, with insights into innovative technological solutions.

Initiatives such as Enel's Network Digital Twin and other case studies on projects implemented on the distribution network and on innovations under development in the national and European context will be studied in the master's degree, detailing both the technical and economic aspects. The program includes theoretical lessons and experimental laboratory training with: 330 hours of frontal teaching dedicated to the energy context, the specifics and implementation of Smart Grids, a technical focus on Health & Safety, 100 hours of laboratories and 210 hours of project work in the company.

Applications for the Master Smart Grids call are open until 6 January 2021.

The training course of the Master will be presented on July 27 with a webinar entitled "WHY DO GRIDS NEED TO BE SMART?" organized by the Master Course Commission, in which Prof. Maurizio Delfanti, CEO of RSE spa, Prof. Marco Merlo, Director of the Master and Prof. Alberto Berizzi, professor of Electric Power Systems, will participate on behalf of the Milan Polytechnic; for the Enel Group will be attended by Dr. Vincenzo Ranieri, Head of Infrastructure and Networks Italy and Eng. Gianluca Sapienza, head of the Smart Grids Unit of Infrastructure and Networks Italy.
