Smart cities, an open source community is born

Telefónica, Orange, Engineering and Atos create Fiware, an Open Source community for the development of common standards for Smart Cities, which will be operational from the end of the second quarter of 2015. “The integration of Internet of Things, Cloud and Big Data technologies, together with the support of Open Data policies, they will create the conditions for a new period of strong transformation of cities into Smart Cities”, reads the joint note from the companies.

For Bruno Fabre, executive vice president of Telcos, Media & Utilities of Atos, “the Smart Cities market has turned out to be a very slow process. The set of open source solutions and a new approach to business models will serve to unlock this new opportunity for the Third Digital Revolution”.

Fiware “will support more efficient management of citizen services and provide open standards that will transform cities into engines of growth,” said Marieta Rivero, chief deputy commercial officer of Telefónica.

Paolo Pandozy, CEO of Engineering, stated that “Fiware is a set of technologies that allow us to be a leader in the open solutions market. Furthermore, we believe that Openness and Innovation are the pillars in the Smart Cities domain for which Engineering offers cutting-edge solutions”.

Finally, Patrice Slupowski, Vice President of Digital Innovation, Orange, said that it is "an incredible opportunity for European cities: to be able to take advantage of the availability of open solutions and a large community of developers who rapidly bring digital services and innovation to the life of its citizens".
