Mediaset and Sky switch tasks: from the 2015-16 season and for the following three years, Alfa Romeo will no longer broadcast the Europa League and Sky the Champions League but vice versa – Mediaset has invested a record amount (700 million) and the title goes up on the Stock Exchange – Sky is making up for it with the foreign championships, the Olympics, the World Championships and from this year the MotoGp.

TV rights – Sky, goodbye Champions League: from 2015 only on Mediaset

Mediaset and Sky swap tasks: from the 2015-16 season and for the following three years, Alfa Romeo will no longer broadcast the Europa League and Sky the Champions League but vice versa. This for a figure, the one spent by Cologno Monzese, which is close to 700 million euros, or three times the amount invested for the three-year period still in progress by Sky, which as usual does not communicate the exact figure of the new agreement for the competition " minor" but lets it be known that he has grabbed it for a "constant value to the current one".

The coup immediately allowed Mediaset to go on the stock market and to foresee a rosy future thanks to a monstrous investment, which will guarantee the absolute exclusive on the top continental football competition: in fact, not only are the rights for the live transmission of all matches on pay TV (Mediaset Premium) and those for one match per round visible free of charge only on Mediaset networks, but also the same matches on a deferred basis – the highlights, all the goals visible on the same evening – in addition to the live streaming of the meetings on all fixed and mobile devices.

Therefore, while Mediaset currently has the right to clearly broadcast the match deemed most important on Wednesdays (and from next season, the 2014-2015 season, this match will even be broadcast exclusively, i.e. only on Mediaset and not also on Sky), satellite TV starting from 2015 will instead be excluded from everything. And it will aim straight at the Europa League, currently considered a minor competition but which guarantees a greater number of matches and also a greater number of Italian teams involved. And even more chances of final victory, given the debacles of recent years in the Champions League. In fact, there are only 3 Italian teams qualified for the Champions League (of which only 2 directly), while those in the Europa League are three guaranteed plus any relegated from the first group stage of the main tournament. To say, this year, from February onwards, there are 4 Italian clubs still in contention in the "minor" tournament (Juventus, Naples, Fiorentina and Lazio), and all with good chances of final victory (the final, moreover, is played in Turin), in the presence of only Milan in the Champions League, moreover in the almost certain role of the sacrificial victim.

Therefore, a choice on savings, that of Sky, and certainly parochial, because the Italians will also be able to have more followers in the Europa League, but the fact remains that to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi you will need to subscribe to Mediaset Premium, which moreover also has the rights to the Serie A championship. Unless in Rogoredo's area they are focusing on foreign championships, of which they have returned to having all the rights (after a year without the Spanish Liga), and on other sports , given that after Formula 1, the Olympics and major events (World Cup, etc), starting this year to cheer on Valentino Rossi it will be necessary to subscribe to a subscription to Murdoch's pay TV, who stole the World Championship from his rivals Mediaset.

Who, however, seem to have come to terms with it, and gloat through a press release: “With the Champions League, we reach an excellent position – underlines the Biscione – which will strengthen the offer for Premium customers and will gather a new clientele who will have the opportunity to get to know and appreciate the quality of Mediaset pay TV in terms of both football and exclusive TV series and films. All visible also on-demand, online and on mobile devices”. We'll see who is right.
