Sky lands in force on digital terrestrial: agreement with TiMedia for 5 channels

Sky Italia is about to land on digital terrestrial television with five channels, pending the outcome of the auction for the Serie A rights. This was revealed by Bloomberg, specifying that the company would have reached an agreement at the end of May with Telecom Italia Media Broadcasting (subsidiary of TiMedia) for the rental of the bandwidth necessary to broadcast five channels in digital mode. Sky Italia's intention, based on the agreements, is to start broadcasting the channels by June 2015. The news is confirmed by financial circles according to which, when fully operational, the contract would be in excess of 20 million euros a year.

At the moment it is not clear whether the agreement is strictly functional to obtaining the digital rights for the Serie A 2015-18 matches, for which Sky has presented the Lega Calcio with an offer of 420 million euros, higher than that presented by competitors for this platform. The outcome of the tender is expected next week. The contract with Timb would therefore allow Sky to be ready to implement its digital offer in the event of the assignment of those rights.
