Earthquake, Napolitano: a "shrewd and balanced solution" for businesses

For the resumption of economic activities, "provisions for temporary usability have been envisaged, until the moment of certification of the safety of the plants": the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano said this this morning in Bologna, on the occasion of a visit to the areas affected by the earthquake. The solution found in the decree law, signed yesterday evening by Napolitano, is "shrewd and balanced", aimed at preventing companies from waiting too long, paying a sometimes fatal price. In short, the decree should resolve the impasse created by the Civil Protection Ordinance of 2 June, which has raised harsh criticism from entrepreneurs, shopkeepers and even mayors.

However, even for the President of the Republic, safety always comes first "an attempt had already been made - he warned - to resume and in some cases we were badly hit and overwhelmed".

The 26 dead on May 20 and 29 are too high a price to pay for a civilized country, added the prefect Franco Gabrielli, head of civil protection: and "there are no economic reasons that can justify the contempt of the rules or the postponement of provisions that impose virtuous behavior".
