Sir Winston Churchill. How much is his work worth?

Churchill, the great statesman and politician who harmoniously combined his liberal beliefs in social reform, his deep conservative devotion to the legacy of his nation's history, his unshakeable resistance to tyranny from right or left, and its ability to look beyond Britain to the wider Atlantic community and the greater unity of Europe. But also the painter who loved to paint goldfish.

Sir Winston Churchill. How much is his work worth?

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, (born November 30, 1874, Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England — died January 24, 1965, London), was a British statesman, orator, and author who as prime minister (1940–1945, 1951–55) rallied the British people during WWII and led his country from the brink of defeat to victory.

In any age and time a man of Churchill's strength and talents would have left his mark on events and society. He was also a gifted journalist, a biographer and historian of classical proportions, an outstanding orator, and a self-taught but truly talented painter. As a politician, he harmoniously combined his liberal beliefs in social reform, his deep conservative devotion to the legacy of his nation's history, his unwavering resistance to tyranny from right or left, and his ability to look beyond the Great Britain to the wider Atlantic community and the greatest unity of Europe. A romantic, he was also a realist, with an exceptional sensitivity to tactical considerations while at the same time unrelentingly adhering to his strategic goals. An ardent patriot, he was also a citizen of the world. An indomitable fighter, he was a generous winner with a romantic heart that we find in all his painting of him.

Much loved by the Anglo-Saxon market, his works are highly sought after, in some cases they have reached records, come for the painting"The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell, 1932 " which in 2014 was awarded by Sotheby's London to 1.891.349 € (as reported at the bottom of the text).

Painted in 1932, The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell is undoubtedly Churchill's masterpiece of the decade. Hanging in prime position above Lady Soames' mantelpiece in the West House drawing room, the painting is the culmination of everything Churchill had learned since he brandished a paintbrush in 1915.

Capturing the spontaneous movement of the brightly colored golden orifice, the composition combines a masterful display of Churchill's skill and talent in recreating the subtle reflections and textures of water while at the same time reviving a subject that is particularly dear to him . His granddaughter Emma Soames recalls the Sunday ritual for all grandchildren to follow their grandfather to the pool to watch him feed the goldfish. The pool was part of Churchill's extensive refurbishment of all of Chartwell's water features and has become a particularly contemplative place where his beloved fish could be fed for the rest of his life.

Unlike many of his landscapes at Chartwell which focus on a sweeping panorama of the impressive gardens, which extend across the Weald of Kent, The Goldfish Pool is unusual in zooming right into the water itself, viewing the lush foliage along the side of the waterfall. More than just capturing a corner of the pond, however, the image is an exemplary essay in tonality, combining multiple shades of greens and browns to stunning effect. The quality of this work is unmatched.
