Singapore approves 36 protected Italian products

Good result for geographical indications protected in a free trade agreement

Singapore approves 36 protected Italian products

Balsamic vinegar of Modena, Parma ham, San Daniele, but also Asiago, Fontina, Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, and more. A total of 36 Geographical Indications productions that have obtained registration and protection by the Singaporean authorities in the free trade agreement with the EU. The green light bears the signature of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore - IPOS.

The news comes from our Ministry of Agricultural, Food, Forestry and Tourism Policies which has worked in collaboration with the protection consortia and producers. A success of the Italian supply chains that launch products of excellence on a growing market. For Minister Gian Marco Centinaio, the agreement signed with Singapore is a significant result for the entire Italian agri-food system. A goal not to be overlooked, especially if linked to the anti-EU policies of duties and controversies. Italian producers go to a small but rich country having on their side a legal instrument to be able to defend geographical indications against imitations. A heavy protection so as not to harm local consumers too, on whose tables they risk ending up with products passed off as Italians, says Centinaio, and which have nothing to do with the quality standards and control systems of our supply chains. Local contexts based on environmental protection and bio-compatible structures. After all, Italian certifications are among the strictest in the world.

The free trade agreement is part of a wider program against the abuse of Italian geographical indications and the counterfeiting of quality food products. Many Italian dossiers are open in Europe and the new Commission will be called to greater commitment for the renowned IGP, DOP, DOC and DOCG. Recognitions expected for companies and exports.
