Mayors: a thousand sign the letter asking Draghi to stay. Meloni's wrath, but the appeal is bipartisan

They have risen to more than a thousand the mayors who signed the open letter published last week to ask Mario Draghi to stay at Palazzo Chigi. The news was announced on Sunday by Stefano Lo Russo, mayor of Turin and one of the coordinators of the initiative together with Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence.

"We Mayors, called every day to the difficult management and resolution of the problems that afflict our citizens - reads the letter -, we ask Mario Draghi to go ahead and explain to Parliament the good reasons they impose to continue government action".

And again: “With disbelief and concern we are witnessing the proclamation of the government crisis generated by the irresponsible behavior of a part of the majority. Our cities, calls after the pandemic and with the war underway for an unprecedented effort for economic recovery, the creation of essential public works and the management of the social emergency, they cannot afford a crisis today which means stagnation and division where action, credibility, seriousness are now needed".

Meloni's attack

The appeal was attacked by Giorgia Meloni: "I wonder - said the leader of the Brothers of Italy - if all the citizens represented by Gualtieri, Sala, Nardella or other mayors and regional presidents who have expressed themselves in this sense share the appeal for a government and a Parliament now light years away from the real Italy go forward undaunted, condemning this nation to immobilism only to guarantee the salary of parliamentarians and the left in government. And, regardless of who voted for them, I wonder if it is correct that these mayors and governors representing all the citizens they administer, even those who think differently, use the institutions like this, shamelessly, as if they were sections of the party. The lack of rules and common sense in the ruling class in Italy is starting to frighten”.

Nardella's reply

The reply of Nardella: "The attack on the mayors and regional presidents, who are the politicians closest to the citizens, demonstrates a certain nervousness and a certain aggressiveness on the part of the honorable deputy Meloni - replied the mayor of Florence - I am sorry that Meloni did not notice that among the signatories there are many centre-right exponents. Perhaps Fdi hopes to gain support from the country's institutional and economic chaos, but only ashes are collected from the ashes ”.

In fact, among the signatories of the open letter to Draghi there is also Alessandro Ghinelli, mayor of Arezzo elected with the center-right. His stance was not liked by the Arezzo provincial coordination of Fratelli d'Italia, which in a note defines Ghinelli's decision as "unacceptable", because "he too must represent all citizens as well as the majority of him".
