Cigarettes: new bans on the way (also electronic and Iqos). And the controversy immediately flared up

New hold coming soon for i smoking. After the increases of some cigarettes the Government is reportedly developing new restrictive measures to combat smoking. And this time not even those are saved electronic and heated tobacco products (such as IQOS, Glo e ploom) that tens of thousands of young people are starting to smoke. Already last January, illustrating the programmatic guidelines of the Ministry of Health, Minister Orazio Schillaci had announced his intention to extend the ban on smoking to all types of cigarettes. The target? A “tobacco-free” generation.

Where it will be forbidden to smoke a cigarette (even electronic): the hypotheses

Il prohibition of smoke for all types of cigarettes would affect not only the interior of the premises but also the tables outside. In the latter case it would be possible to smoke only if the place had an external area reserved for smokers, while those inside the premises and airports. Also stop at stops outdoors by metro, bus, train and ferry. Ban for all types of cigarettes even in parks in the presence of children and pregnant women, but the ban could become total. Finally, there will also be a squeeze on the advertising of electronic cigarettes of various types, for which the (very rigid) limits already imposed on traditional smoking products will apply, for which any form of direct or indirect advertising is prohibited.

The new bans are not yet definitive, these are just hypotheses. The text could also be included in another measure during the approval stage.

What about offenders? They will have to pay one fine. Currently it should be the same for those who break the traditional indoor smoking ban: 275 euros, reduced by 50% if paid within 60 days.

Close on cigarettes, who is for and who is against

The announced tightening sees the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister against, Matteo Salvini, avid advocate of vaping and the like. “E-cigarettes are helping so many people to give up regular cigarettes. As an ex-smoker who quit 4 years ago, the ban on smoking them outdoors seems over the top. What do you think?” he wrote on Twitter. And it is not the first time that Salvini has intervened in defense of the electronic cigarette business. The reason? Vaporart, a company specializing in the trade of liquids for electronic cigarettes, appears in the list of lenders of the League.

And there were other critical voices. The famous songwriter Gino Paoli "threat" to found "the party of smokers". "Smoking is bad? I'm 88 years old." Then he admits: "I almost quit." And also the founder of the multidisciplinary research center that studies innovative scientific solutions for the reduction of smoking harm (Coehar), Riccardo Polosa he reiterated “We must stop equating cigarettes that release thousands of toxic substances and tar with products without combustion that are much less toxic. Combustionless alternatives have proven to be 95% to 99% less toxic than conventional cigarettes and today represent the only real solution for all those who are unwilling or unable to quit”.

Of course, of the opposite opinion doctors e oncologists. It is a “positive decision – said the president of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (Aiom), Saverio Cinieri – because it has been scientifically proven that smoking favors the onset of many types of cancer. Smoking is also related to cardiovascular and neurological pathologies; therefore, the extension of the bans is undoubtedly acceptable”.
