Security and EU summit, Rome armored city for the weekend

The Gentiloni government was already preparing to strengthen all the security measures for Saturday and Sunday in Rome to keep under control the demonstrations that will take place on the occasion of the European summit for the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, but the terrorist attack in Westminster obliges it to raise the bar and lock down the capital. Over the weekend Rome will actually be in a state of siege to prevent any terrorist attacks after Nice and after London but also the violence of the black bloc.

To strengthen the security machinery, the Minister of the Interior, Marco Minniti, will today chair the Anti-Terrorism Strategic Analysis Committee (Casa). The Government awaits information from British intelligence but knows that the only way to try to prevent terrorism and violence is the systematic and obsessive control of the territory.

Numerous checkpoints will be set up in the city and all the buildings and emblematic places of the capital will be severely armored, but it is not excluded that the anti-violence squeeze will become even tougher in defense of citizens' safety. Political controversies aside, it is jarring that in such a dramatic moment for Rome, the mayor Virginia Raggi has gone to rest on the Alpe di Siusi.
