We vote in Berlin, Merkel risks

Voting will take place on Sunday in Berlin for the regional elections and Chancellor Angela Merkel risks another electoral blow after that of Mecklenburg. According to forecasts, the ultra-right populists of the AfD could collect a new success also in the regional elections in Berlin and the collapse that is foreseen for the two major parties should have a consequence: the end of the grand coalition between the social democrats of the SPD and the Christian Democratic party of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) at the helm of the city.

Given that the SPD should confirm itself as the first party, this means a possible eviction for the CDU from Germany's most important municipality.

That of Berlin, with its almost 2,5 million voters, represents the last test before the three regional elections next spring that will precede the policies of the second half of September 2017. A warning against the "monster that wakes up again in Germany ” was made at a rally by Foreign Minister and SPD member Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
