Troina is rediscovered, in the heart of the Nebrodi

In the Nebrodi, in the heart of Sicily. In one of the most beautiful parks in Italy where the environment and the habitat are also defended against malfeasance. The former President who escaped an attack to defend lands and naturalistic context. There is history, there are cultural and work traditions that we try to maintain with enormous sacrifices. Daily commitments of goodwill and collaboration between organizations and institutions. In Troina, excavations are carried out in the Catena state-owned area until the beginning of August. The third archaeological excavation campaign of the University of Messina has just started. The history of the city is reconstructed. A project started in the 70s then replicated in 2017 and 2018.

The archaeologist Giacomo Scibona had started it, but now Professor Caterina Ingoglia, together with Lorenzo Zurla, have taken up the research already undertaken together with students, graduates and specialists, who have chosen to join the didactic proposal to broaden their training as archaeologists on the field. There are in Catena 25 students that yes they are differenti for brilliant results e capacity of work Futures scholars of extraordinary civilizations . This time they concentrate their specific work in the eastern area of the "Rocca", because there are still historical doubts about the origins of Troina. Before leaving, the team wondered: when it was born, for how long it was inhabited, was there continuity between the different housing phases, how it was organised, such as the name of the ancient site that exists under the current Troina. I hope that this year – says Professor Ingoglia – the Catena area will reveal all its potential, to finally deliver an important and unknown part of their history to the people of Troino.

The Municipality is among the most interested in enhancing the site."With this new campaign - adds the mayor Fabio Venezia - the project to enhance our cultural assets continues which, we hope, will shed full light on the Troina of the Hellenistic and Roman ages and allow full use of the archaeological area and its numerous artifacts.” Moreover, the municipal administration is also involved in the creation of the archaeological museum, where the finds resulting from the research will be exhibited.

The excavation campaign stems from a memorandum of understanding, signed in 2016 between the Municipality and the Department of ancient and modern civilizations of the University of Messina. A virtuous example of understanding and attention to culture. Sicily would need more money and concrete projects, because history has made it rich. In this case the Municipality takes care of supporting and providing hospitality and logistic support for the study and excavation activities in the area. The University leads the projects, catalogs the finds and will support the birth of the Museum. The research activity, in more detail, foresees the investigation of an extraordinary palimpsest of the history of the city, with contexts ranging from the necropolis to the inhabited area. Students from Florence, Trento, Palermo, Milan, Cosenza and Malaga are also coming to give support. The project was also joined by the archaeologist and anthropologist Elena Varotto, Professor Francesco Galassi of Flinders University in Australia and the owners of the Fapab Center (Forensic Anthropology, Paleopathology and Bioarchaeology Research Center) in Avola, the international laboratory specialized in multidisciplinary studies. Another Sicilian excellence esteemed by half the world.
