Greener shipping but hydrogen ships are not close yet

According to the General Manager of Confitarma, Luca Sisto, shipping is moving towards an ecological transition but cradling false illusions does not help: an overview of the country system is essential

Greener shipping but hydrogen ships are not close yet

Shipping has already started the ecological transition by reducing CO2 emissions and also the sulfur content in fuels. Certainly LNG and all the other technologies already installed on board our greener ships will contribute to the transition, by 2050, towards future fuels with zero CO2 emissions, such as hydrogen for example - he said Luca Sisto General Manager of Confitarma, in his speech at the event "Shipping industry: free port", organized in Trieste on 9 June by SHIPPING 4.0 - But beware of slogans: there are still no hydrogen ships and the technologies for using this energy source are not yet mature in the naval field. An adequate transition period needs to be planned carefully”.

"The diversification of energy supply sources will make the link between ship and port even closer, which will have to provide solutions to satisfy a much more varied demand".

"The challenge is not only technological and can be won at the country system level only if we manage to have an overall vision: today, no new LNG supply ship will have the convenience of flying the Italian flag due to the limitations imposed to the international register and the lack of competitiveness of our first register with respect to European flags”.

“The port of Trieste, thanks to its history and its characteristics – added Sisto – is the most tangible example to demonstrate that the port is the best observation point to have the right overview. But a maritime-port and logistic system is successful if, in addition to the port, all the other elements of the chain are also competitive, including our flag, our shipping companies and our crews”.

“Instead, the impression is that too often, concentrated on what happens on land, we turn our backs to the sea even if that's where the ships come from. “It is the ships that choose the best landing place!”.
