Museum week, admission is free from 5 to 10 March 2019

From today 5 March and throughout the week until Sunday 10 the initiative of the ministry for cultural assets and activities 'I go to the Museum' takes all enthusiasts free of charge to the most beautiful Italian galleries.

To find out the free admissions decided individually by each museum or archaeological site, the ministry has activated an online database to know the dates with free admission and plan each visit.

In total they are over 420 places that can be visited throughout the peninsula, where only in the Lazio region there will be 89 sites open for free: from the Galleria Spada, to the National Gallery of Modern Art to the famous Vittoriano in Piazza Venezia in Rome.

But still the Archaeological Park of Pompeii in Villa Adriana in Tivoli, the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to the open-air museum city of Matera, capital of culture for 2019.

THE BONISOLI DECREE

If one of the first comments by the Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities Alberto Bonisoli had been "we are moving towards the decision to abolish the first Sundays of the month free at the museum", now with the entry into force of decree 28/ 13 there will be no less than 20 days with free admission during the year inside museums, state archaeological sites, parks and monumental gardens. “With the Io Vado al Museo initiative we are going further than in the past and increasing the cultural offer in our country. The new concessions are the result of a process, started in recent months by the Mibac ”, Bonisoli explained that he must have understood the debate that arose following his boutade of putting his hand to the concept of gratuity.

"By increasing the number of free days in all the state museums of Italy, we want to improve the ways of using our cultural heritage and make known some hidden or little-known, but equally precious treasures". The decree signed on 9 January introduces a series of changes to the ministerial decree number 507/1997 by means of which the establishment of the entrance ticket to the various Italian sites is regulated.

The new measure establishes six days of free admission from Tuesday to Sunday dedicated "to the promotion of museums and places of culture between the months of January to March and identified each year by the Minister", six Sundays with free admission in low season from October to March, 8 ticket-free days independently identified by the directors of autonomous museums and regional museum poles and a ticket at a cost of 2 euros for boys and girls between the ages of 18 and 25. “With this decree, two things will fundamentally change: the first is that with the Week of Museums, a precise period will be identified for the launch of the museum season with all the free state museums. This year it will take place from 5 to 10 March and will be an opportunity to encourage citizens and families to visit our beautiful museums and admire the wonders they house. The second novelty is having given the possibility to each state institution to set up a sustainable gratuity plan, improving the quality of the offer and therefore the fruition of cultural heritage, guaranteeing safety and protection of cultural heritage in harmony with the needs of the territory".
