Serie A between Sky, Dazn and TimVision: where to see the championship?

24 hours from the start of the championship there are important movements between the companies called to broadcast the matches on TV or in streaming – Dazn is in the center with the other two trying to grab the whole Serie A in extremis.

Serie A between Sky, Dazn and TimVision: where to see the championship?

The Serie A championship begins on Saturday 24 August, with Parma-Juventus brought forward. Millions of fans are waiting for this moment to put an end to the forced abstinence from football to which they are traditionally condemned in the summer period, in the absence of European or World Cups.

While the coaches refine the technical-tactical aspects of the matches and the managers try to implement a last-minute transfer market shot, important movements are recorded among the companies called upon to broadcast championship matches on TV or in streaming.

At the center of everything is Dazn, the platform of the Perform group which last year managed to acquire the rights to 3 matches in the Serie A championship - the Saturday night advance, the 12:30 match and one at 15:00 pm on Sunday - in addition to match of the Spanish Liga, the French Ligue1, the Dutch Eredivisie, the American MLS, the Chinese Super League and the Japanese JLeague, the Copa Libertadores and other international sporting tournaments and events.

Di a few days ago the news is Sky, which in the last tender won the right to broadcast 7 of the 10 scheduled matches of the Italian top league, would like to be able to offer its subscribers the entire package of A matches: 10 out of 10. This is why it is trying to make a in extremis agreement which provides for the creation of a linear channel that contains the best of Dazn's sports programming.

However, the 3 Serie A matches held by the streaming platform would not appeal only to Sky. According to an indiscretion published by the Sun 24 Hours, in parallel it would be developing a negotiation between Dazn and TimVision for the distribution of the contents of the former on the platform of the latter. It is no coincidence that Tim's stock gains 1% in Piazza Affari – after reaching a maximum of +1,5% – achieving one of the best performances of the day on the Ftse Mib. In short, investors like the hypothesis, while just over 24 hours after its debut, fans are waiting to see where they can watch the Serie A championship.

In this context it should also be taken into consideration that Tim signed an agreement with Sky at the beginning of August which allows the platform of the company led by Luigi Gubitosi to access Sky's Serie A content (starting from the other seven matches not broadcast by Dazn). Equita's analysts state that “the business model underlying the agreements, as well as their duration, is not known, but should provide for revenue sharing, with no guaranteed minimums for Telecom. In this way, Telecom's commercial proposal should be attractive without loading the group with excessive upfront costs for accessing the contents”.

The purpose of Timvision, through these separate agreements, would be to launch an overall pay offer containing all Serie A matches.

By virtue of the maneuvers mentioned, the fans ask themselves a single question: "Where can we watch Serie A?" Unfortunately, there is currently no definitive answer. Barring sensational twists arriving in the next few hours, nothing will change for the first two league games. The news could instead come after the stop scheduled in September for the qualifiers for the European Football Championship. At that point it will be discovered whether Sky and TimVision have made the coup by managing to grab the entire package of Serie A matches and above all at what price. All that remains is to wait.
