Serie A: Sky, still no agreement with Mediaset on TV rights

For the moment, no agreement has been envisaged between Sky Italia and Mediaset on Serie A TV rights before the League's decision on the assignment of the 2015-18 licenses. This was communicated in a note by Sky Italia on the eve of the decisive meeting of the assembly of the Serie A teams to establish the awarding of the television packages. "To date, before the assignment by the Football League, there are neither the reasons nor the conditions for agreements between the operators" reads the note.

The press release insists on the "discord" theme of the tender, i.e. on the legitimacy of the assignment to a single operator (and in particular Sky which presented the best offers) of both packages with the matches of the main teams both digitally and via satellite .

Sky, convinced that the combination is feasible and that it is owed to it by Lega Calcio, suggests that the assessment should only be made a posteriori by the Authority: "If, after the assignment has taken place, the existence of an abuse of dominant position linked to Sky's maintenance of the exclusivity on the matches of the 8 teams, Sky will adopt the solution that should become necessary, including the distribution through third-party operators of the rights acquired”.

The issue of packages A (satellite) and B (digital) to a single operator "could be an Antitrust issue" - concludes the note - for this reason Sky "refers totally to the competent authorities".
