Serie A, report cards: Juve, the Scudetto does not absolve Sarri

Winning the ninth consecutive Scudetto is not enough to celebrate Sarri's Juve, because the beautiful game has never been seen - The real news was Atalanta and Lazio - Inter's regrets - The comeback of Milan, the Naples and Rome after the lockdown – Genoa is safe, Lecce relegate

Serie A, report cards: Juve, the Scudetto does not absolve Sarri

Genoa is safe, Lecce relegated to Serie B. With the last verdict that was missing, the 2019/20 championship is officially archived, for obvious reasons the strangest in history. In fact, Serie A had never stopped for three abundant months and then restarted in the summer, arriving to play 12 days (13 with stoppage times) in a very short space of time. Now, waiting for the European cups, the time has therefore come for the final scoreboard, obviously referring only to the championship: for the rest, in fact, there is still an August of passion.

JUVENTUS - VOTE: 7,5

The vote, in the light of the scudetto just won (ninth in a row, no one in the major European championships had ever succeeded), can only be good, yet we are far from excellence. In fact, the feeling is that Juve have won more for the demerits of others than for their own merits; to certify it, moreover, there are the numbers that have seen him lose 7 times and even concede 43 goals, 13 more than last year. In short, we are far from perfection and Andrea Agnelli, not surprisingly, has avoided publicly celebrating the tricolor, preferring to focus on the Champions League and the final eight to be reached at all costs. Sarri (vote 6, for now…) will have taken note, aware that the Scudetto alone will not be enough to keep him on the most successful bench in Italy.

INTER - VOTE: 7

A good championship for the Nerazzurri, even without any prizes. However, Inter greatly improved last year's score, when they reached fourth place on the final day, totaling 69 points, 13 less than today. Participation in the top European cup has never been in question, which is why Conte (vote 6,5), between one outburst and another, can still be said to be (moderately) satisfied. However, the feeling of having thrown away a great chance to surprise the worst Juve in recent years remains, especially as the direct clashes represented the highest point of the black and white season. In the next championship, obviously, expectations will be much higher and second place will probably no longer be enough. Conte's problems, as long as he's still on the Nerazzurri bench...

ATALANTA - SCORE: 8
LAZIO - SCORE: 7,5

The paradox of getting a better grade than the person in front of you. Atalanta and Lazio would have gladly traded our prize for a higher position in the standings, there is no doubt about this, yet, joking aside, it is fair to underline how both have gone far beyond all expectations. Few, in fact, thought that the Biancocelesti could reach the Champions League, moreover after having even been in the running for the Scudetto, even fewer those who believed in the confirmation of the Bergamo players, capable of reaching the podium for the second consecutive time. To Gasperini (vote 8) and Inzaghi (7,5) the merit of so many results, as well as sincere applause for having shown that money matters, but ideas do more.

Roma - VOTE: 6

This Rome could have done more, but also less. At one point, in fact, things got pretty bad, so much so that even fifth place seemed at risk. It would have been too much after a Champions League first leg, but since the championships last 38 days, the scenario was turning into reality. In the end, however, the Giallorossi, in one way or another, got back on track, so much so that they can now look to the Europa League with confidence. Fonseca (6) is well aware that a success would change the season, but also that the future will have to see him more convinced of his ideas, otherwise the Capital could engulf him just like his predecessors Garcia and Spalletti.

MILAN - VOTE: 6

Let's face it right away: the vote is a perfect average between 4 of the first 7 months and 8 of the last 45 days. Impossible to make logical sense of the Milan championship, completely insufficient until the lockdown and transformed immediately after. The final standings probably tell the truth with a sixth place which, at the beginning of the season, would have been welcomed without any kind of enthusiasm, even if it is fair to underline that it was the only real goal left. Pioli (7) was able to rebuild on the rubble left by Giampaolo (4), enhancing various mysterious objects (above all Calhanoglu, but also Kessié) and making the most of the Ibrahimovic card, which came out of Maldini's sleeve at the most difficult moment of the season. The ending evidently authorizes a certain optimism in view of next season, when the goal will be the Champions League. And this time, after having toyed with the idea of yet another revolution for months, we will try it in the name of continuity.

NAPLES - VOTE: 5

Here too a dutiful clarification: the vote refers to the championship, not to the Italian Cup nor to what happened (and could still happen) in the Champions League. Right then to reject Gattuso's Napoli (6), even if the faults for this failure are almost all of his predecessor Ancelotti (4). It was he, last summer, who spoke openly about the Scudetto, instead he was sacked after 15 days, leaving the team at a stellar distance even from the Champions League area. Gattuso gathered a team on its knees and put it back on its feet, using the championship above all as a training ground for the competitions that are still open. Excellent idea, but it is clear that seeing Napoli, in recent years the only real alternative to Juve, finish in seventh place at minus 16 from Atalanta and Lazio makes a decidedly negative impression.
