Serie A in chaos: will it be played until July? At risk 700 million

Having made Europe, we must do… La Serie A. A few hours away from the eagerly awaited UEFA summit which sanctioned the postponement of Euro 2020 to June 2021, our local football institutions are trying to reschedule the Championship, viruses permitting. Any decision is subject to the battle against Covid-19, the victory of which is essential for the resumption of so-called "everyday life", including sport. Uncertainty is the first problem, but not the only one: even assuming an "end of emergency" starting from early May, it is still difficult to draw up a calendar that manages to combine our needs with those of Europe.

UEFA has indeed postponed the European Championship, but not Champions and Europa League, or at least not what the various federations would have expected. Furthermore, the two cups, by the will of the organizers of Nyon, there will be no reductions, therefore no dry races or final four of any kind. But the definitive "blow" to the individual championships came with the dates of the finals, both in June, one on the weekend. A big problem for those who, like us, have to make up for 12 days plus one in the middle, as well as two semi-finals of the Italian Cup and the relative final. You need 15 free slots, to which we must add those relating to the European cups, still the prerogative of Juventus, Inter, Atalanta, Naples and Rome.

In short, total chaos, especially since UEFA has already made it known that it does not like playoffs and playouts, but only a definitive ranking to draw up the next editions of the Champions and Europa League. Everything revolves around this and, looking at the figures, it is also clear why: the cup with big ears and its younger sister, in fact, produce a round of millions.

Also the Serie A but he's not joking, as confirmed by the president Gabriele Gravina. “Football is a multifaceted industry that involves many people – explained the number one of the FIGC – The economic dimension of our world is experiencing a moment of great crisis, not finishing our tournaments would lead to an effective damage of around 700 million”. To ask for a pledge, for obvious reasons, they would be above all Sky e DAZN, That they would recover 300 million TV rights: an eventuality to be avoided at all costs, that's why the Federation has asked (and will get) a delegation to go on until mid-July, in order to complete their championships.

This, evidently, will have consequences not only for this season but also for the next one. The start of Serie A 20/21 will have to be postponed to September, all in complete harmony with the stops for the national teams, which Ceferin will no longer give up, and with the European Championship scheduled for June. The market will also change, compressed into a month (abundant) as in the 80s, as well as the player s' contracts, already subject to negotiation (downward) with the AIC (in Serie C there is even talk of layoffs). In short, the sooner we start again the better, a bit for everyone. Admittedly, the Coronavirus doesn't seem exactly sensitive to calendar talk…
