Apple ruling: Samsung collapses on the stock market, Nokia flies

Investors are even tougher than Californian judges. On the Seoul Stock Exchange, Samsung shares lost 7,45% in one day, which translates into a loss of over 12 billion dollars in capitalization. The collapse was not entirely unexpected: the Korean giant expected that the markets would not let it pass without pain the sentence of the Tribunal of San José, California. In fact, American justice has established that Samsung has copied six Apple patents and that for this it must pay a billion dollar fine.

But Samsung does not give up and will appeal, also on the strength of the sentence of the Court of Seul, which had found Apple guilty of infringing two patents of the Asian competitor, while Samsung would have copied only one. Plus the Asian company will ask for the suspension of the preliminary ban on the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 established by the judge of San José on June 26. Yet some analysts are already starting to estimate losses in the order of 4-5% for Samsung's fiscal year, due to the higher charges necessary for the use of patents.

On the contrary, today it is earning the title Nokia, which on the Helsinki Stock Exchange recorded an increase of more than 10%, to 2,75 euros. The possible block on the sales of some Samsung products could give oxygen to the Finnish giant to spread its smartphones on the market. Until now, Nokia mobile phones, which use the operating system developed by Windows, have remained in the shadow of the two giants Apple and Samsung (which runs on Google's Android software). But perhaps the cards on the table are being reshuffled: after the sharp drop recorded in the first part of the year, the Finnish giant's stock gained 83% in the last month.
