Senate, Boschi: bold reform, 134 changes already approved

The minister for reforms replied in parliament on the reform of the Senate. “It is the fruit of ten years of work, not of improvisation. 4.400 amendments were presented, with 134 modification points between the Senate and the Chamber. 1.600 were presented for the Constitution”

The reform of the Senate is not an impromptu attempt but the last link in a decennial work. Minister Maria Elena Boschi, in her reply in parliament - now underway in the Senate - defends the government proposal which has the aim, she says, of giving certain times to legislative work by making the Chamber of Deputies the center of legislative work.

The Senate, he reiterated, is entrusted with the role of hinge between the central State and the territories, between the State, Regions and Municipalities. An indispensable role given the current imprecise definition of the respective powers. The parliamentary examination was extensive - underlined Boschi in response to those who accuse the government of an authoritarian approach - and 4.400 amendments were voted in over 120 dedicated sessions between the Chamber and the Senate to the reforms, with 134 changes approved. For comparison, he continued, when the Charter was discussed in the constituent assembly, the amendments presented were 1.600 amendments. Parliamentary work, he then observed, was very thorough. Hence the conclusion: "We do not accept vetoes, it is the decisive time"
