Seat Pagine Gialle: the company-union clash is more bitter

The paper yellow pages as we know, have been completely replaced by the internet. Nobody uses them and therefore there are no more advertisers and small users who paid small sums to be named in the lists. As a result they are no longer printed and the thriving company that until a decade ago seemed to be the goose with the golden grapes - SEAT - entered a deep crisis, was about to declare complete insolvency when it was bought by Italiaonline which is carrying out the digital transformation of the former Yellow Pages. But this process involves a large number of redundancies of the staff used to doing the old work and the reconversion of part of it into a new digital-based profession.

Initially Italiaonline had proposed the closure of the historic Turin office and the dismissal of 400 employees due to partial cessation of activity. Minister Calenda has started mediation which led the company to present a new plan which provides for the halving of redundancies from 400 to 200, with the creation of a new Digital Factory, i.e. a production line capable of providing advice to small and medium-sized enterprises. About half of the people who could remain in the company should be transferred to Milan and first attend a training course to master the new technologies. About the remaining half would remain in Turin where they would mainly deal with administrative problems.

The response from the Turin employees was negative. Minister Calenda was accused of every wickedness, while in substance employees argue that the company cannot be trusted as the agreement provides that at the end of the training course independent evaluators decide on the actual skills acquired by the worker and thus enable him for the new job. Basically they fear that the history of the courses is a fake and that in fact at the end of the layoff period they will all be fired. In fact, no one wants to be evaluated.

What can happen in the coming days and in particular Wednesday when a new meeting between the parties is scheduled at the Mise? It is clear that the creation of a new Digital Factory represents an important investment for the company to stay on the market and was made possible thanks to the support of Invitalia and Unioncamere. But if the unions refuse the compromise the company will probably have to proceed with the implementation of the old plan which provided for the closure of the Turin office and the dismissal of all 400 employees due to cessation of activity. What's more, the creation of a new division capable of competing on the digital market will have to be renounced for the moment, which certainly represents the future for many companies that need to gain competitiveness. In short, Italy still risks losing ground compared to the international giants that have been occupying the market for some time.

  1. Seat the largest Italian web company???? Are we joking? Seat saddled web space with all those already included in the list and tried to get paid for it. It is a bit like history that Tavernello is the No. 1 of Italian wines. Thanks to the c…o!! People use it for cooking. But then, do you understand Internet sites? What Seat offered couldn't be called an Internet site, do me the favor.

Fake article. Seat was the largest Italian web company, a Google and digital partner for years…. it was worth 3 times italiaonline and it had come out clean from an arrangement…

It's not like that, before writing, inform yourself!

That's not true, the card still makes about 1/3 of the turnover. Get informed!
