If Manchester City is worth as much as Somalia

Based on a recent financial transaction, the valuation of the citizens' club has reached 4,8 billion dollars: a figure that exceeds the gross domestic product of 33 countries

If Manchester City is worth as much as Somalia

If the Manchester City if it were a country it would be there 152nd world economy, just after Somalia. It's not a joke. Or at least, not entirely.

It may seem grotesque, but to reach this conclusion it is enough to compare a few numbers. The starting point is the news released on November 26 by the private equity firm Silver Lake, which announced the purchase of the 10% of City Football Group, a vehicle headed by Abu Dhabi and controls the club coached by Pep Guardiola. Cost of the operation: nearly 500 million dollars. It means that the overall assessment of the England champion team touches the sidereal share of 4,8 billion dollars.

Now if we take the list of Countries around the world sorted by Gross Domestic Product, we discover that Manchester City would have every right to appear in the table. Of course, it would not be part of the G20, but it would not be in the last positions either, given that in total the planet has 185 independent states. How to say that 33 Countries – well more than the 28 EU members, 27 after Brexit – they are worth less than Manchester City.

According to estimates by the International Monetary Fund for 2019, the GDP of Somalia it amounts to 4,958 billion dollars and is at number 151 in the world ranking. It follows it Swaziland, with 4,657 billion. In between, if business value were a GDP, there would be the citizens of Kun Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne.

Even lower in the ranking appear countries such as Burundi (157th with 3,573 billion), eritrea (167th – 2,110 billion) e San Marino (170th), which with its 1,591 billion is worth exactly one third of Manchester City. Moreover, seen from a distance, the San Marino national team shirt looks exactly like that of City.
