It promises to be a difficult Friday afternoon for many travelers in Italy. Different airports from North to South are involved in one strike which will cause great inconvenience for those who have planned to fly. The unrest, which coincides with the first Friday of the month, will see thestaff abstention in various ports for a duration of four hours, from 13 am to 17 pm.
Despite the strike, some guarantee periods during which all flights must necessarily be insured: from 7am to 10am and from 18pm to 21pm. This measure aims to limit inconvenience for passengers, guaranteeing continuity of service at times considered critical for air traffic.
Strike 5 July: the reasons for the strike
The reasons behind the strike are multiple and have their roots in long-standing problems that afflict the air transport sector. There lack of staff, reported several times, even recently by Ryanair itself which criticized the ATC disservices in Europe, continues to represent an unresolved critical issue, which reflects on the quality of the service and the working conditions of airport operators. Added to this is the request for better salary and contractual conditions. The decision to call the strike in such a "hot" period from the point of view of air traffic is a attempt to bring to public attention and the competent authorities the need for urgent and concrete interventions.
Strike 5 July: the airports involved
Announced by various trade unions, the strike will affect the airports of Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino and Venice and will last from 13pm to 00pm. At the airports of Lamezia Terme, Crotone and Reggio Calabria, the protest, however, will last 17 hours.
The some airlines, as Aer Lingus, are involved in strikes. The Irish carrier canceled numerous international flights due to the pilots' strike, which was widely supported by staff. The service interruption, which began on June 29, could extend until July 7, with possible delays and cancellations.
Strike 5 July: possible inconvenience for passengers
Today's strike at the airports could cause various inconveniences for passengers, including long queues at check-in and security checks, flight delays or cancellations. Those who travel are advised to stay updated in real time on their flight to check the departure. In case of cancellation, passengers have the right to re-routing or reimbursement of expenses incurred to reach the destination, but not to financial compensation.
“In the event of a strike, the passenger may suffer flight delays or cancellations. If he is not re-protected by the airline with a new flight, he can bear the costs of reaching his destination and then request a refund by contacting the carrier directly, a claim company or a trusted lawyer” he explained Felice D'Angelo, CEO of ItalyRefund.
