Schengen, Renzi and Mogherini brake on suspension

Germany, Italy and Mogherini hold back on the suspension of Schengen. In view of the meeting of interior ministers scheduled for Monday, Italy and Germany have already reiterated today, by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, their firm no to questioning the treaty: "We must be the strongest to recall the value of the European Union", Renzi told RTL 102.5, “terrorists are not blocked by suspending Schengen. Some terrorists were born in our cities - Renzi recalled - there is a mixture of fear and lack of vision in this hypothesis. I think it is putting the very idea of Europe at risk. I hope it doesn't happen, but it doesn't depend on the Italian government. We are in favor of strengthening controls, but without suspending the free movement agreement. If it happens, we will draw our consequences”, added the Prime Minister.

On the same wavelength also Schauble, questioned by Spiegel online: “If the Schengen system is destroyed, Europe is dramatically in danger, from a political and economic point of view”. Secondo the European High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Federica Mogherini, the estimates on the costs of a stop to the Schengen treaty, which would put an end to the free movement of citizens and goods in Europe, are "impressive", all the more so as Europe is in a difficult phase of economic recovery.
