Samsung, profit boom despite the troubles

Samsung surprises, despite the problems deriving from the withdrawal of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones (at the potential risk of overheating and explosion): the South Korean group has in fact announced, in a preliminary way, that it will exceed expectations in terms of profits. In fact, in the fourth quarter of 2016 operating profits will rise by 50% compared to a year earlier to around 9.200 billion won (about 7,8 billion dollars), thanks to the good performance of the semiconductor and display sectors which will amply compensate for the Note disaster.

In any case, turnover in the period will show a slight contraction, around -0,6% (about 53 trillion won). These are preliminary estimates, which will be confirmed towards the end of January. The performance will still be the best since the third quarter of 2013: it appears facilitated by the recent weakening of the won, but it also ends up signaling a recovery in smartphone sales.
