It is sensational and in some ways inexplicable why Samsung, after the serious problem concerning the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, faces a second injury: the recall of 2,8 million washing machines highly loaded with heavy defects that have caused several accidents (and 733 complaints).
The problem occurs during the spin cycle: there are hundreds of cases in which the appliance has lost the upper door. The piece, hurled with force, struck a total of nine people and the toll includes a broken jaw and a damaged shoulder.
Samsung has distinguished itself in recent years for excellence, innovation and the pursuit of quality. It has churned out extraordinary digital products, it has also revolutionized the world of white goods, especially as regards large refrigerators. The washing machines it is recalling were manufactured in 32 different variants, in China and (to a lesser extent) in South Korea and Thailand.
The race for increasingly competitive prices has actually eroded margins, times and competitive advantages. Today, in all the factories of the world, this deadly reduction has resulted in a constant lowering of the quality of the components.
They are all, or almost all, Asian components. They are largely unreliable knockoffs of quality European components. Do you want low prices, continuous promotions, fierce wars on price lists? The results are these.
