Samsung, best quarter since 2018

Mors tua vita mea. The Chinese rival Huawei is going through a difficult moment, targeted by the US especially for 5G, and then the Korean giant Samsung takes advantage of it, smartphone sales champion who came from a couple of difficult years, which culminated with the perplexities related to the crisis from Covid. And instead in the summer quarter, from July to September, Samsung saw the profit – according to preliminary estimates – even rise by 58% to 9 billion euro. Not only that: in the period analysed, the company sold approximately 80 million Galaxy smartphones, with a progression of 50% compared to the previous quarter. The result is attributable, according to analysts, to three factors: the lockdown has favored smart working, which has led to an increase in technology purchases; the reopening of businesses in the summer brought many customers back to the shops; the "boycott" of the USA and Europe against Huawei is benefiting the competition.

The tug of war between Washington and Beijing is in fact pushing the Chinese giant, champion of 5G technology, to buy more and more components (microchips) on the Asian market, and therefore from Samsung, given that President Donald Trump has set additional tariffs also for the export – by American techs – of that type of product. Furthermore, the 5G battle is penalizing Huawei, given that the Western world now makes no secret of preferring other operators, perhaps the European champions Nokia and Ericsson, but now Samsung itself could enter the game, until now it has remained out of sight. But that just in September it made its first important coup: it sold 5G devices to the American Verizon for 6,6 billion dollars.
