Geneva Auto Show canceled: semiconductors missing

There is no peace for the Geneva Motor Show. After the last two editions, canceled due to Covid, the third edition scheduled for February 2022 has also been cancelled. This time not so much for Covid as for the shortage of semiconductors, have presented automakers with new priorities that they need to resolve first.

“Many exhibitors have indicated that the uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic make it impossible for them to make a firm commitment to GIMS 2022. Added to this is the negative impact that the current semiconductor shortage has on automakers,” said l CEO of the Geneva International Motor Show, Sandro mosque. “The chip crisis is likely to drag on into next year, with negative financial implications for manufacturers. In these uncertain times – continues Mesquita -, many brands are therefore unable to commit themselves to participating in a fair that would have taken place in just over four months. Considering all factors, it became clear that it was necessary to postpone the event, and announce the news as soon as possible to avoid short-term cancellation.

The auto sector suffers most from the shortage of semiconductors. All this because in forecast of the drop in demand inevitable with the lockdowns, almost all automakers in 2020 cut production plans and processor orders. However, they were cautious and the demand for cars did not drop as much as expected. Indeed, the shortage has led to a knock-on effect, even more so for electric cars, where the number of semiconductors on average is double that of traditional cars.
