Electricity demand rises and confirms economic growth

Electricity demand is rising again and confirms the ongoing economic growth, even if not disruptive. In January, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 27,9 billion kWh, an increase of 4,9% compared to the same month of the year previous. Territorially, the January 2017 trend variation is positive everywhere: +4,5% in the North, +4,7% in the Center and +5,7% in the South. In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value of electricity demand in January recorded a positive variation of 1,9% compared to the previous month. The profile of the trend confirms the growing trend recorded as early as last November.

As regards the power at the peak in January, the peak of 54.512 MW was reached at 11 on Wednesday 11, with an increase of 2,8% compared to the peak of January 2016. The demand for electricity in the first month of the year 95,4% was met by domestic production and the remaining portion (4,6%) by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (26,8 billion kWh) grew by 17,7% compared to January 2016. Hydro (+22,5%), thermal (+21,1%) production sources increased and photovoltaic (+7%); geothermal (-0,8%) and wind (-7,4%) sources of production are decreasing.
