Ryanair: mini Antitrust fine for maxi cancellations

The Italian Antitrust has punished Ryanair with a mini fine of 1,85 million euros for the maxi cancellation of flights made in the months of September and October 2017.

The Authority explains that the Irish company is responsible for unfair commercial practice for

"have made numerous flight cancellations largely attributable to organizational and management reasons already known to the company - not dependent on occasional and exogenous causes beyond its control - causing considerable inconvenience to consumers who had planned their trips for some time and had already booked and paid for the relative air ticket”.

Not only that: the Antitrust also ascertained that Ryanair informed users incorrectly, deceptively, "since it offered them two possible solutions (refund or ticket change) without adequately notifying them of the existence of their (further) right to financial compensation” provided for in the event of flight cancellations.

However, during the investigation by the Authority, Ryanair updated the information on its website, sending individual communications to the consumers concerned to inform them of their rights following the cancellation of flights. For this reason, the Antitrust has reduced the amount of the administrative fine.
