Ryanair: goodbye to the second hand bag for free

The hand luggage nightmare becomes even more sinister for Ryanir passengers. Until today, the anguish concerned dimensions and weight: if excessive, the trolley was sent in the hold. Now the rules change. The era of the second free hand baggage up to 10 kg is definitively archived.

From 1 November – and for those who book from September – it will be possible to board the flights of the Irish low cost airline only with a small personal bag (no larger than 40x20x25 centimetres) to be placed under the seat in front of your own, not in the overhead bin. To take another piece of hand luggage – typically a trolley – with you, you will have to shell out between 8 and 10 euros each way or buy priority boarding at the price of 6 euros.

This solution, according to the airline, should solve the problem of too many hand suitcases to be checked on, which often cause delays in flight departures.

Yet, at the same time, Ryanair explains in a note that "nothing will change for 60% of our customers as 30% already fly with priority boarding and another 30% with only one personal item".

The company also claims that this change will not bring any additional revenue because the new tariffs "are significantly cheaper than the current system".

Ryanair's direct competitors – easyJet, Wizz Air and Norwegian Air – allow you to board with only one medium-sized suitcase.
