Rumors of an alliance between Peugeot and General Motors

French automotive group PSA Peugeot Citroen has announced it is in talks about potential collaborations and alliances, and even if the names of the eligible partners have not been mentioned, all the clues lead to the American General Motors, according to the latest rumors in the international press.

The French house would aim for an alliance that goes beyond a partnership on production but not a merger of the two companies. "In the context of a globalization strategy and the improvement of operational performance, PSA Peugeot Citroen is looking at potential collaborations and alliances", reads a statement released in the early hours of today.

However, according to the online newspaper Latribune.fr, discussions between PSA and GM began several months ago and have not yet led to an agreement. Each agreement should in fact be approved by the Peugeot family, which owns 30,9% of the capital of the automaker and 48,3% of the voting rights.

Even the Financial Times - which quotes two people close to the situation - speaks of advanced discussions for an alliance that should see the two companies join forces to build cars and components in Europe.

PSA is undergoing a major restructuring and has announced cuts and divestments, as it seeks to expand overseas to reduce dependence on the stagnant European market.

Following the spread of these rumors, Peugeot stock climbs more than 8% on the Paris Stock Exchange.
